‘Sing a New Song!’ – Children’s Choir FAQs
- When do the sessions run?
Come to either Waltham Abbey Church on Tuesdays or St John's Church, Loughton on Thursdays. We are open from 4pm, ready to sing from 4.30-5.30pm. Pick-up closes at 6pm. Our sessions run afterschool and continue throughout the Summer holidays too.
- How old do you have to be to join in?
'Sing a New Song' is for children approximately Year 4 and above, including those of secondary school age. If you are unsure of whether you're the right age to join, have a chat with us.
- Do my parents have to stay?
We encourage children to be left in church for the session, so that we can create a sense of community and trust together. We follow guidelines for always having the appropriate amount of DBS-checked and safeguarding-trained adults onsite. If, for whatever reason, a parent needs to stay for their child, that's completely fine too. Parents will need to fill out a form before leaving their children with us, which will include emergency contact details and medical information to help us best look after your children. If you have any specific concerns around care, wellbeing, or safeguarding, please speak to us.
- What sort of things will we be singing?
We will be singing a mix of styles, including both secular and sacred music. It's not just about the music though! We will also learn how to use our bodies healthily, how to look after our voices, and how to create community and have fun together.
- Do I have to come every week?
No! We would love to see you when you are able to come, but this is a group of minimal commitment. Join us when you can! If you can give us a heads up when you are coming, even better.
- Will we perform?
We are hoping that the choir will perform in church occasionally over the course of the year, but that's not the main aim of the group.
- Do I have to pay?
No! These sessions are completely free, although donations to the mission and ministry of our churches are always appreciated.
- What is expected of me?
We hope you will be able to come along, engage well with the singing and activities, and have good behaviour. Apart from that, just be yourself and enjoy singing a new song!
